About Us

Lincoln Trail Elementary School serves 370 students in grades kindergarten through sixth near Lamar, Indiana in Clay Township. It is part of a rural district with a population of 11, 618 that includes 3 elementary schools (K-6), 1 elementary school (preschool-sixth), 1 middle school (7-8), and 1 high school (9-12). This rural community is made up of professional workers, blue-collar workers, and farmers. Spencer County is known as a safe, quiet, family-oriented community. The largest employers in this area are Holiday World and Kimball International Heritage Hills Division.

Lincoln Trail Elementary opened in the fall of 1993, with 304 students in grades K-6. The enrollment significantly increased each year until finally reaching its peak in the 2000-2001 school year at 435 students. Out of concern for this increased enrollment and a significantly lower enrollment at a nearby school of the same size, Lincoln Trail accepted voluntary transfers. These transfers have had an effect on the enrollment, which now stands at 370. Our attendance rate is annually in the top 25% of the state.

Lincoln Trail is located on 26 acres, which includes an outdoor/wetland lab. The playground is divided into three areas, which include soccer fields, baseball and softball fields, and basketball courts. The building itself contains 19 classrooms, including 2 kindergarten rooms designed for all day kindergarten, 2 conference rooms, a centrally located library and office, and rooms designated for art, music, computer lab, and physical education.

Teachers are fully certified in their teaching fields. Sixty-eight percent of teachers have earned a Masters degree. The staff includes a part-time counselor, nurse, and media specialist.

The Lincoln Trail staff continues to grow due to professional development opportunities. Implementation from some of the workshops includes Differentiated Learning, Signing Exact Language, Indiana Writing Initiative, and The Four Blocks Literacy Model. Each teacher actively participates on several school committees. The teachers meet weekly to work in study groups, which are designed for teachers to work on areas of need in their classroom and to collectively come up with innovative solutions. Many learning activities support and enhance the Lincoln Trail Elementary curriculum. School wide programs include D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), Red Ribbon Week, Career Week, 100 Days Celebration, Celebrations Assembly, Life Skills Character Education and Recognition, and W.O.W. Week (Windows of the World). Every student participates in a school wide activity period. Students have the opportunity to choose from a variety of activities such as drama, scrap booking, cooking, German, chess, and student council. Teachers and community volunteers lead this enrichment program.

Lincoln Trail Elementary offers students the opportunity to learn in an extensive technological environment. All classrooms are networked and each has word processing, database, spreadsheet, email, and Internet capabilities. The staff has access to CD-ROMs, laser disks, digital cameras, a scanner and a weather station. All classrooms are equipped with TV, VCR, and a radio with both CD and cassette players. Teachers utilize the Southern Indiana Educational Center (SIEC), Wilson Center and Lincoln Heritage Public Library to supplement and enhance their teaching themes or units.

In addition to newsletters, parents are afforded more personal ways to receive information through kindergarten open house, back to school open house, grandparent day, chili supper, science/art fair, and winter and spring music programs. The Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) publishes minutes from each executive board meeting that are sent home each month. The PTO fundraising projects support teacher allotments, resource lab, and at least 2 field trips per classroom. In addition, the PTO has generously agreed to purchase other items brought to their attention that would enhance student learning and school environment.

At Lincoln Trail we celebrate each students individuality. Staff, parents, and community members work together to address the individual learning needs of all students.
