About Us:
Lions are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes in their local and world communities. By conducting service projects and raising funds, Lions strive to help those in need, wherever need exists. The Lions motto is "We Serve".
In 1925 Helen Keller addressed the Lions Clubs International Convention, challenging them to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness". Since that time, service to the blind and visually impaired, has become one of the associations most significant activities.
In addition, Lions participate in service activities emphasizing diabetes awareness, education and research, work with the the physically and mentally impaired, issues that pertain to the environment, community welfare, international understanding, and youth programs.
On March 28, 1938, the Claymont Lions Club was chartered. The Wilmington Lions Club sponsored this new service club. It became the seventh Lions Club organized in Delaware and the first club of any kind organized in Brandywine Hundred.
In 1938, there were only twenty members. We currently have over 80 members, men and women, serving the Claymont community.
The worthy objectives of Lions International, Service to the local community, the State, the Nation and the World remain the Club objectives. A Claymont Lion unselfishly gives dedicated service to others.
During the past seventy-six years, the club has initiated over thirty-two different fund raising projects. The Claymont Lions have earned and placed back into the community over $1,000,000 to date. Current Club fund raising projects include the sale of Christmas trees, semi annual Pancake Day, and semi annual White Cane -Vision Days. In 1938, the club's Activities Budget was just over $500. Last year's budget was over $40,000, ....a measure of the successful growth and expansion in the club's sphere of work and service for others.
Each Lion is one of over 1.4 million Lions world wide, and our club is one of over 56,000.
To Lions, "We Serve" is not only a motto, it's a definition and philosophy.
