The Foundation's Mission is to preserve and present to the public, the history of the first US Naval base in the West.
Mare Island Naval Shipyard was founded on 1854 by David Farragut. A National Historic and mark was established in 1975 at Mare Island. 513 ships were built at Mare Island. The last was the USS DRUM, launched in 1970. Congress has approved the return of the drum subject approval of our application for donation, by the Navy. Your donations and pledges are needed to help pay for the maintenance of the DRUM. Volunteer résumé's are sought for qualified maintenance personnel.
