Marie Murphy School (MMS) is part of the Avoca School District #37, attracting students from four surrounding communities: Glenview, Northfield, Wilmette, and Winnetka. These are suburban communities located approximately 20 miles north of downtown Chicago, Illinois.
MMS has a state-of-the-art facility, where approximately 250 students in the middle grades (6-8) are welcomed. The student body is a microcosm of the world-at-large, with over 20 different nationalities being recognized on our annual Fall Housing (census) Report. Our diversity is at the heart of our distinctiveness.
MMS converted to a full-scale teaming structure in 2003. Each grade level has, in effect, its own master schedule and is centered around a core of five full-time teachers. Each core academic class is one-hour in duration while physical education, foreign language, and the allied arts classes (art, music, home arts, and speech & theatre) are conducted in forty minute periods.
The goal in every classroom is to engage students into higher levels of thinking and inquiry, while also addressing motivational and other affective needs that students might have. Often times, teachers try new and innovative approaches to stretch their students and to make the learning fun and meaningful.
