Markham Ravine Neighborhood Committee
The Markham Ravine Neighborhood Committee is all about the preservation of valuable open space, wetlands and riparian woodlands. We are about the protection of productive wildlife habitats. We are advocates for the enhancement of a habitat ecosystem which is critical to restoring and maintaining a significant circle of life, which at one time flourished within our Lincoln community.
The Markham Ravine Neighborhood Committee (MRNC) started in 2002 with just four Lincoln residents interested in creating a year-round pond adjacent to the Markham Park, located on Toyon Circle in west Lincoln. We have now grown significantly into a community-wide endeavor spanning the last three years, representing over 1000 hours of citizen involvement. Lincoln area residents have been meeting together, sometimes as many as two to three times per month. We have hiked miles throughout the Markham Ravine corridor to map out a plan of action. We have sought and received the advice of experts.
As a result of the expanded community involvement, education and input, the MRNC has now set its sights on much broader goals than just a pond. In fact we no longer even endorse the concept of a pond because we realize that such a pond is not in the best interests of a balanced ecosystem throughout the Markham Ravine.
Our recommended plan of action now speaks to the restoration and management of the total Markham Ravine wetlands corridor within Western Lincoln for years to come. We are recommending and fostering systematic habitat planning, including such strategies as native plant re-vegetation, protection of vernal pools, storm water detention basin management, stream bank stabilization and erosion control, as well as oak tree and wildlife mitigation. We believe that the implementation of these goals will add significant aesthetic appeal to the Markham Ravine by re-establishing riparian forests, native grasslands and oak woodlands, as well as increasing wildlife populations throughout the area.
Our goals recommend the development of a vast recreational trail system which will ultimately connect to the Auburn Ravine and tie into the Foskett Ranch area proposed regional park. We have a vision which, upon implementation, will result in over 26 miles of trails throughout Lincoln, in the midst of ever-growing suburban sprawl. We even have a vision of trail connectivity to all of the beautiful vistas located throughout Placer County, resulting in over 100 additional miles of trails.

Our continued efforts will be directed towards further expansion of our current community-wide efforts. We need the help of all Lincoln residents, not just those who reside in the Markham Ravine area. We have become a "community," with a "spirit" to collectively create a city of Lincoln which we will want to call "home" for many years to come.
