The center utilizes the former Green County Normal School, which is a three story building constructed in 1920. There is a parking lot and green space adjacent the building, with the facility taking up an entire city block.
The Senior Center is a department of the City of Monroe, and receives most of its funding from the city budget. Additional funding comes from donations and fundraising activities. The operation of the facility is the responsibility of a Senior Citizen Board, a full-time director and two part-time staff. In addition, up to 135 volunteers become involved in organizing and running the various activities and events.
The center serves residents aged 55 and over from Monroe and the surrounding area. The average daily attendance is 160 persons, with approximately 1,300 citizens served in 1994. Approximately 85%-95% of the persons served were residents of Monroe. The center provides a variety of activities and events throughout the year. Some of the activities are continuously held year-round, while other activities include special events, community support projects and trips which are one-time activities. In addition, the center rents meeting space to non-profit and community groups.
