Moss Side Middle School provides a setting that is developmentally appropriate for all of the fifth and sixth grade students in the Gateway School District. It is the next step that our students take after completing their education at one of the five elementary schools within the district. The students at Moss Side Middle School are given the opportunity to work with an educational team of teachers and change classes throughout the school day. The support of the team of teachers along with the advantage of a consistent peer group is very helpful to students as they develop their organizational skills.

When students reach the fifth and sixth grade levels they begin to explore their interests and exercise their freedom to choose two five-week explore classes during the school year. When the five-week explore courses are not in session each grade level works on interdisciplinary units. The location of the school provides easy access to Gateway High School, Moss Side Elementary School, and the Monroeville Public Library where educational programs and resources can be shared to benefit all concerned. The experience provided at this school could best be described as “a bridge of learning that will lead and prepare students for a positive secondary experience".
