About Us:
The Nansemond-Suffolk Shooting Club was founded in October of 1982 by Mr. Robert A. Davis, at its current site, a sand quarry owned by the Art-Ray Corporation, adjacent to Lake Cahoon Road in Suffolk, Virginia. Bob has always been an avid gun enthusiast and in the summer of 1982 was introduced to metallic silhouette shooting. After obtaining access to the sand quarry through the Art-Ray Corporation, Bob proceeded to construct and eight position covered firing line, and then to purchase several sets of silhouette targets. He then enlisted the services of Mr. Dan Hostetter to manufacture suitable target stands. With the range operational, the next big step for the club was to apply for permission to hold sanctioned silhouette matches. Being more familiar with the NRA style silhouette shooting, the club’s initial membership decided to apply to the NRA for club sponsorship and sanctioning. This was readily granted and the club began holding sanctioned NRA silhouette matches in early 1983. Shortly thereafter, the club applied for and received sanction from the International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association (IHMSA) to hold .22 caliber silhouette matches. Even though the target distances at NSSC are all measured in meters, (vice yards), IHMSA agreed to sanction our matches in that we use a slightly larger target (1/2 size vice 3/8 size). The club sponsored four matches per month: NRA Hunter’s Pistol NRA Smallbore Hunter’s Pistol, NRA Smallbore Rifle, and IHMSA .22 Caliber.
