"Northeast Kingdom" is a term used affectionately throughout Vermont and beyond when referring to the corner of the state against the Canadian Border and the upper Connecticut River - the counties of Caledonia, Essex and Orleans. The term suggests an enviable and sought-after quality of life as well as a loyal and dedicated workforce. The "Northeast Kingdom" offers many lakes, mountains and quaint villages that are easily accessible to major market centers, interstates and state highways. More than 75 million customers are within a 500-mile radius for overnight delivery. Not all retirees are looking south to retire. One of the region's largest towns, St. Johnsbury, was named a top retirement spot in a national publication. Citing the lower costs and environment, the report indicated the Northeast Kingdom looks very enticing to retirees. The Northeast Kingdom offers a diverse economy built around manufacturing; the retail, wholesale and service industries; banking; real estate; insurance; government employment (county, municipal and educational); and tourism and agriculture (dairy, poultry, sheep and maple syrup). Vermont ranks one of the most livable state in the union according to The Rating Guide in America's Fifty States. Based on analyzing multiple factors - relating to quality of life, including business climate, safety, arts, politics and much more - Vermont received high marks.
