Mission:
Our mission is to provide quality education that allows all students the opportunity to expand their horizons as productive citizens within the educational community and the community at large.
About Us:
Northwestern Elementary School is part of the Northwestern School Corporation in Howard County. It was built in 1965 with additional classrooms added in 1968. Our school is located in the northwest part of Howard County at 4223 West 350 North, Kokomo, Indiana 46901. Northwestern Elementary School presently houses approximately 630 students in grades kindergarten through six. Northwestern Elementary is the larger of two elementary schools within our school system. In addition to the general classroom experience, our students have access to many supplemental special areas and special services. These include, but are not limited to, such areas as Music, Art, Physical Education, Library, NEO (Gifted/Talented), NES Entertainers Choir, Art Plus, Special Education, Speech Therapy, Remedial Reading, and Guidance Services.
Although Northwestern Elementary is located in a rural area, only 2% of the school parents and patrons work in agriculture. The majority of our parents and patrons are employed in the fields of business and industry, education, medicine, and various other occupations
We at Northwestern Elementary School feel that parents are our partners in the very important job of educating the children of our community. In fact, this concept is reflected in what we believe at Northwestern Elementary through our mission statement. "The mission of Northwestern Elementary is to provide a learning environment where children are motivated, challenged, and assisted to realize their potential through the combined efforts of parents, teachers, and the community."
Parents are encouraged to take an active role in their child’s education at Northwestern Elementary. This ranges from participating in parent-teacher conferences to being a member of an active parent-teacher organization at our school. Parents are invited to participate in the PTO as the organization provides volunteers for classrooms, special projects, and in virtually all areas of our school.
Communications between our school and the home is very important and recognized as such at Northwestern Elementary School. The Northwesterly, our school newsletter, is sent home every other week to keep students and parents informed about upcoming events at our school. Many classroom teachers have developed their own weekly newsletter in an effort to keep parents informed. Parents can keep informed about classroom assignments and projects over the telephone by using our Homework Hotline. As a school, we also hold scheduled Parent-Teacher Conferences twice a year, once in October and once in May. We are very proud of and excited about the parent participation and attendance at our parent-teacher conferences. Each year 96%-98% of our parents attend these conferences to discuss student successes, concerns, and progress.
Northwestern Elementary School provides a wide-range of resources for its students. In the area of technology, the school is on a 100 megabyte-wide area network that interconnects all buildings in the corporation. All computer stations in the school have access to the Internet and all staff stations have electronic mail through this network. All grade level classrooms have five student stations and one teacher station with a color printer. Most special classrooms have three student stations and one teacher station. All stations have current Pentium processor technology with CD-ROM's. There is a 30-station computer lab with a printer adjacent to the school for group instruction. There is a 16 station portable laptop lab with a laser printer to be used in classrooms. Northwestern Elementary has one full-time computer instructor and employs one full time computer assistant/technician. Our computer instructor teach all grade level students a core technology curriculum involving word processing, database, and spreadsheet skills. The corporation technology director holds regular in-service training sessions for staff.
