Chartered in 1980, OMF is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to public service through maritime-related education, recreation, and research. The basic purposes of the foundation are to:
Encourage, sponsor, and coordinate a variety of maritime-related programs and activities.
Promote increased knowledge of, and respect for, skills regarding appropriate utilization of maritime resources.
Work with other established organizations devoted to meaningful maritime activities.
Through the work of dedicated volunteers the foundation has grown and broadened its community service programs, and has become affiliated with the National Safe Boating Council, American Sail Training Association, and the U.S. Sailing Community Sailing Council. The foundation's organizational structure and programs have served as models for other communities throughout the country. In 1992, the Oswego Maritime Foundation was cited by the National Community Sailing Council as conducting one of the two best seasonal instructional boating programs in the U.S.
