Savior's Lutheran Church has adopted a purpose statement by which we live. It is a message about how we view our mission in the church. It states that we are "Grounded in faith, gathered in love, and sent with a purpose, so that others may gain the Kingdom!".
What that simple phrase says is that, first, we are grounded in faith. That's our beginning point, our common denominator. We may not all be Norwegian. We may not all be married. We may not all be under 40, or have a driver's license, or speak English. But as members of this church, the one thing we share is the Cross of Jesus Christ.
The second clause of our purpose statement says that we are "gathered in love." The simple fact is, the members of Our Savior's love one another, they care for one another, and they are intimately acquainted with the joys and struggles that their church friends endure. There is a world of people out there who cry out for that sort of community. They lack the one thing that we in this church have in spades; a community that loves one another.
The purpose statement concludes with just that, a purpose. "Grounded in faith, gathered in love, and sent with a purpose, so that others may gain the Kingdom!" What we have to share with people is not just a loving community and a joy-filled hour on Sunday mornings. What we have to share with them is the Truth about the God who loves them and offers to forgive their sins. It is our duty to go and tell others the wonderful message about Jesus Christ, so that others may gain the Kingdom that has already been promised to us.
