History

Since its beginning Perry Christian Church has been served by fifty-six ministers. Plans are in the works to build a new building on Call Road. As of 1-11-06 the board confirmed our decision to hire Joe Myers & Barry Deming for the New Building Project.

We have many activities to offer. Some of them are: Bible Study Groups, a Church Growth Group, the Annual Bazaar, the Annual Joash Banquet, a Vocal Choir and a Bell Choir, a Clown/Drama Troop, and the Happy Hookers who make and sell Rag Rugs.

The Church was originally known as the Church of Christ in the town of Perry, Ohio. It was organized by Elder Sidney Ridgon on August 7, 1829. They first met in the Parmly School House on Blakemore Road. That building has since been swallowed by Lake Erie.

The land that the Church is now on was donated either by the Parmly Family or the Sinclair Family.

In 1867, Jehail Parmly donated land for a parsonage on North Ridge Road. He also donated the land beside the Church to be used as a cemetery. The parsonage was built in 1868 and still stands. During this time period everyone stayed after Church and had dinner together -- a nice tradition.
The present brick building was erected in 1885. All activities took place in that one room. The congregation filled the baptistry by carrying buckets of water from down the road.

The section of the building with the Fellowship Hall was added on in 1925. The Fellowship Hall served as a dining room, Sunday School classroom and gymnasium. It was called the Educational Plant or the Chapel. The Church was offering religious education in conjunction with the Perry School System. In 1948 the Supreme Court decision said that it was unconstitutional to teach religion to school children so the program was discontinued.

The land where the present parking lot is was bought in 1957. There was a house standing there that the Church rented out. In 1982, after it was condemned, it was given to the fire department who burned it as part of their training program.

A new parsonage was built on Center Road in 1949. With the help of many of the Church members, an addition was added to the home in 1987. Parsonage was SOLD in December 30, 2004.

Rev. Janet Mers joined us on August 7, 2005 to continue our history of ever moving forward into the future. Together we are looking forward to building a new church on Call Road and expanding our ministry and out reach into the community.

It is now 2005. Perry Christian Church has experienced many blessings throughout the past 176 years. We pray that the next 176 years will bring even more blessings. With God's help Perry Christian Church will continue to serve our Lord, and the community and the rest of the world.
