Plymouth Township is one of the oldest townships in Montgomery County, dating back to 1686. Throughout its long history the Township has been in the forefront of business and industry, building a network of transportation routes that aided in the establishment of lime kilns and quarries.Plymouth Township's local school district is Colonial School District. More than a dozen public and parochial schools are located in or near the Township.

The Greater Plymouth Community Center was completed in 2000 and offers many facilities and programs for recreation, leisure, and fitness for people of all ages and interests. The Township also has eleven parks within its boundaries .Specialty and community shopping centers are located throughout the Township. The nearest major shopping centers are the Plymouth Meeting Mall and the Metroplex Shopping Center, both located in the heart of the township.
