History:
A constitution was written on September 15, 1811. The oldest clerk's book contains a copy of this constitution. It had been transcribed on January 7, 1903 by S.J. Langford who was the clerk at that time. The constitution was revised, amended, read, and adopted in regular conference on November of 1902. J.F Goode was the moderator and S.J. Langford was the clerk. Prior to 1902, if records were kept, they were lost. The only record handed down to the clerk of this century was the constitution written in 1811 and the rules of decorum of the church. There was a short history of the church compiled in 1943 by Rev. T.C. Hardman of Commerce, Georgia from his recollection and people living at that time.

Charles Jenkins moved from Jefferson County, Georgia to Madison County in 1819 and occupied the home later owned by John W. Brown and then Hugh Hamrick. Soon after Mr. Jenkins arrived, with the aid of others, he built a meeting house and named it Providence after his home church in Jefferson County. We know it was a Baptist church because the constitution had the statement "We believe in baptism by immersion." Also stated is "We agreeing to assemble ourselves together for worship of God as often as we can, conveniently, to attend to our monthly conferences."

During the civil war, when all the men were away, a few faithful women carried on as best they could. The ladies whom were mentioned were Miss Mat, Miss Mary, Jenny Nash, Misses Ann and Puss Bray. Babe and Tobe Skinner lived in a house at the edge of their yard. They attended church regularly, but the Nash and Bray sisters were too old to walk that far, however their interest in the church never wavered.

There are so many people that have contributed to spreading God's love here at Providence. A few of them are Miss Lerlin Barrett, Miss Inez Barrett, Mrs. Stella Henley, Ann and Luke Rich, Mack and Drucilla Wilson, Jeanette Sheridan, Shirley Epps, Ella Mae Freeman, Deborah Jones, and Ruth Martin. There are many more, but the Lord knows who they are. Chimes were given to the church and dedicated to Mack and Drucilla Wilson by their children in 2002.

For 196 years, from 1811-2007, the church has reached out to serve people of the surrounding area with the gospel of our Lord and Savoir, Jesus Christ, through Sunday School, Training Union, Worship services, Vacation Bible School, Mission programs, WMU, brotherhood, Children programs. The church and its programs have been a Lighthouse in the Poca Community.
