Saint James - Saint George Episcopal Church

History:
The worship of God in accordance with the beliefs and traditions of the Episcopal Church began in Jermyn, Pennsylvania in the fall of 1871. In 1872, St. James' Mission was received by the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania. The current structure was built by the hands of the founding members of St. James' Mission, and was consecrated as the Episcopal Church of St. James on September 23, 1874 by Bishop Howe.
During the year of 1895 in the nearby town of Olyphant, Pennsylvania, St. George's Mission came into existence by the consistent meeting of a handful of people of the Episcopal faith. They met in a hall, and functioned as an operation of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Scranton. In 1908, land was purchased and a church was built. Consecrated as St. George's Episcopal Church, this church was fully functional until its merger with St. James', Jermyn in 1990.
On Ash Wednesday of 1990, the congregations of St. James', Jermyn and St. George's, Olyphant came together as the newly formed parish family of St. James-St. George Episcopal Church under the roof of the church formerly known as St. James'. Today we are an obvious force in the community of Jermyn, reaching out to the community through various activities and events; we also serve as home to support organizations such as the American Cancer Society Daffodil Days and our community's Lions' Club fundraisers. Born out of financial necessity, the Episcopal Church of St. James-St. George is more than a church, we are a parish family. Our church is firmly anchored in the Episcopal faith and its foundation is built on Christ and His teachings. A church in the Diocese of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, St. James-St. George is a family-oriented, Christ-centered church and a landmark in the community of Jermyn, Pennsylvania.
