Five years before the Salem church came into existence, Bishop John Seybert, the first Bishop of the Evangelical Church, passed through Springtown, stopped at the home of Henry Funk, and found a place to preach there. The Rev. Solomon Altemos and Rev. Jacob Riegel were the first to preach in the school house, in 1837 and while there, they visited the home of Jacob Kooker. The Rev. Hummel, a missionary, also preached there several times.With Salem as part of the Lehigh Circuit in 1841, the congregation met in the home of Jacob Clemens (near the Tannery) with Rev. Michael Maize as pastor. The church was built in 1842, but was not large enough to meet the needs of the congregation, so the building was razed and a new one was constructed in 1868.

The interior of the sanctuary was renovated and a Service of Rededication was celebrated on April 28, 1968. Another service was celebrated on September 15, 1991, after the stucco on the exterior of the church building was removed and the original stone structure was re-pointed.In 2001, Salem decided to purchase a modular trailer to meet the growing needs of the congregation as a temporary building as we push ahead in our building campaign. The modular houses the Sunday School classrooms as well our fellowship activities.
