History:

Shaftsbury School is located in a small rural community a few miles north of Bennington, VT in the southwest corner of the state. The Shaftsbury Elementary School opened in 1956 upon the closing of several one-room school houses within the township. The school presently serves grades K-6 and has an enrollment of 240 students, 24 staff members, a support staff of 12, and one administrator. After grade 6, students attend a regional middle school in Bennington, VT. This makes the local elementary school a "center" for the community. It functions as a place for the people of the town to gather for Town and other civic meetings, for dramatic productions, for sports, and for adult education courses. Parent involvement in the school is strong and positive. The community cares about it's school and takes pride in the accomplishments of its students.
