About

SARN originates from the Challenging White Supremacy (CWS) Workshop online. When the year-long workshop ended in December 1998, approximately 20 activists in 7 Southern states organized the founding conference of SARN. The conference was held in June 1999 at the historic Highlander Center in New Market TN.

For the first decade, SARN organized projects and campaigns in Durham North Carolina. In December 2010, SARN expanded into Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina to become a 4-state regional organization.

Campaigns and projects have included passing an anti-sweatshop ordinance in Durham; closing the education achievement gap by engaging parents through Strong Parental Involvement in Community Education (SPICE).

The Ella Baker Tour, January 2008 through March 2010, connected student activists on college campuses with veterans of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to teach about Ella Baker and her role in SNCC and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of SNCC in April 1960.
