Thompson's Spring Hill Farm in northwest Hanover County has been in existence over 100 years. My mother, currently owns the original farmstead and my family lives adjacent it. My great-grandfather purchased the original SHF acreage in the late 1800s. Since that time, our family has harvested timber, and had a self-sustaining farm until my grandfather died in 1981. My great-grandparents and grandparents had livestock, poultry, worked with neighboring farms, and brought electricity and phone lines into the area. Because we have continuously harvested timber for the past 100 years, our place was designated by the Commonwealth in its Virginia Century Farm program. January 2009, the old farmhouse burned down, but the attached loft which received minimal fire damage and water is in the process of being fixed.
