Stenwood Elementary School is a small neighborhood school which first opened its doors in February 1964.
The present day Stenwood Elementary School serves 400 students, preschool through sixth grade. At Stenwood, students are recognized as individuals with diverse backgrounds and respect individual differences. A reputation for academic excellence is evident by high levels of student achievement.
An alternative scheduling model organizes learning in a different way and provides an equitable instructional program for all students in language arts and mathematics based on individual student needs. The schedule maximizes the use of time, space, and school staff members to facilitate small group or reduced-size instruction in language arts and mathematics.
Instructional groups are formed based on the needs of students. These groups change as the students’ needs change. There is on-going assessment to help plan for instruction based on student needs.
Staff members are committed to working together as a professional learning community by establishing a collaborative teaching culture which focuses on best teaching practices and student achievement. A dedicated and active PTA supports extracurricular activities including field trips and cultural arts activities.
Many wonderful opportunities provided at Stenwood depend upon the cooperation of parents. Parents often volunteer to assist in classes and for special events. Staff members and administrators at Stenwood Elementary School are proud to serve the children of the community.
