The beginnings of education in the Tar Heel Community go back to 1775. Through the records of Col. Thomas Robeson we see that the early settlers in this area saw a need for education. In 1775, members of the Tar Heel Community built a school house on Col. Robeson's Property.However humble the beginnings, education has remained an important factor in the Tar Heel Community. Schools have been located at different places at different times, such as the Maysville Academy and Bryant's Mill.

In 1943 the two storied building burned, and the remainder was renovated and is still used today. School was held in local churches and homes during the renovation. The present day facilities of Tar Heel High School Combine the old with the new. The gym was build in 1958 to replace the former one destroyed by fire.

Four classrooms were added to the main building in 1958 and 1976. A new vocational complex was built in 1977 to replace the former wooden agricultural shop originally constructed in 1925.

A principal's residence was built in 1950, it served this capacity until 1979 when it was converted into a bandroom, then later into a physical education classroom, then the Art Room, until it was torn down the summer of 2005.

Two "Huts" were built in 1968 and 1972, by the Ag Students. A field house was built in 1975 and two more classrooms were added in 1977.

In 1987-88, a new bandroom, four additional science and business classrooms and four more classrooms for English and Social Studies were built. In 1988 land for a larger Athletic field was purchased.

In the spring of 2001, Tar Heel lost her High School students to the new West Bladen High School. Many people thought it was the end for Tar Heel School, But time has proven them wrong, it is now 2006 and she is still going strong. We now house the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Our students come from Bladen Lakes, Plainview, and Dublin schools.
