History:
What began as a dream back in the Spring of 1932 has blossomed into a full-fledged community theater, boasting nearly 200 productions in over 70 seasons, with an active membership numbering more than 100, housed in the beautiful Burgdorff Cultural Center in downtown Maplewood.
Founded under the auspices of creating "an organization to advance the art of the theater, to promote interest in the theater, and to provide an opportunity for artistic and dramatic education and enjoyment for its members and the community," The Strollers' ongoing involvement in the local arts community is unparalleled. We were there when the Maplewood-South Orange Adult School raised its first budget, believing in its ability to foster interest and growth in artistic pursuits, and we remain committed to ensuring that future generations enjoy the same artistic opportunities that so many of us have come to take for granted.
Often touted as a producer of exceptional community-based theater, The Strollers continues to garner top recognition from both the New Jersey Theater League (twice winning the coveted Walter Cox Award) and The Bigbee Awards (receiving several prized Golden Seals). In addition to our regular season, which consists of 2 plays and 1 musical (along with our Children's Show), we host monthly Workshop programs, providing first-time playwrights and directors a forum for experimenting with with new works and ideas in a safe, supportive environment.
We welcome anyone with an interest in the arts and a willingness to work toward a common goal, whether onstage or behind the scenes. We're proud of our diverse membership that includes teachers, engineers, lawyers, housewives, business owners -- of all ages and abilities. Each contributes according to ability and time, and reaps the rewards of our combined efforts.
