Rose Hill is located in southwestern Duplin County and is served by CSX Transportation, Inc, US Highway 117, Interstate 40 and a network of secondary roads. It is 45 miles north of Wilmington, 45 miles south of Goldsboro, 85 miles southeast of Raleigh and 60 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Rose Hill lies on the crest of the divide between the northeast Cape Fear River watershed and the Black River watershed and is from 94 to 108 feet above sea level.
Rose Hill had its beginning in 1840 processing naval supplies such as pitch and lumber, following the building of North Carolina's first railroad. Originally located about a mile south of the present town, it was named Rosemary because of the stand of rosemary pine trees which grew abundantly in the area. For the past thirty years, a tremendous growth in the processing and production of poultry and pork has contributed to the economy and well-being of the community.
The town and adjacent area of Rose Hill are served by a well-equipped volunteer fire department and rescue service. Four deep wells provide an almost unlimited supply of pure underground water. A new waste treatment plant completed in 1985 has a design capacity of 450,000 gallons per day. Telephone service is provided by Sprint. Electrical service is provided by Progress Energy and Four County Electric Membership Corporation.
Public schools are excellent and staffed with well-qualified teachers. Schools in the area include Rose Hill-Magnolia Elementary (K-5), one of the most modern elementary schools in the state; Charity Middle School (6-8); and Wallace-Rose Hill High School (9-12). These schools are located within two to five miles of Rose Hill. There are also several private schools in the area. James Sprunt Community College, which is located in the county seat, provides comprehensive training in vocational, technical and general education. Several other colleges and universities are located within an hour drive. Rose Hill also supports Rose Hill Memorial Library, which houses 5,743 volumes and the Duplin County Historical Society Library, which boasts over 6,300 volumes.
In addition to being served by the railroad and a network of highways, transportation services such as Greyhound, Trailways and United Parcel Service are available. Two airports located within the county accommodate private aircraft. Charter flights, as well as commercial service by US Air, American and United Airlines, are available within a 40-mile radius.
Medical services are provided by three physicians and one dentist. Duplin General Hospital, a modern well-equipped facility, is located just 15 minutes away in Kenansville.
The town of Rose Hill's Recreation Program sponsors 25 boys and girls teams and provides two lighted tennis courts and four lighted athletic fields. Magnolia Country Club is located within a 5 mile radius of Rose Hill and offers a 19-hole golf course and swimming pool.
Rose Hill is the headquarters of Murphy Farms. Rose Hill is also the home of Nash Johnson and Sons Farms, Inc. (poultry), House of Raeford (poultry) and Duplin Wine Cellars.
