The Valhalla Union Free School District is dedicated to teaching students to develop desired moral, ethical, and cultural values, to stimulate and expand a continual learning process and to cultivate an understanding and appreciation of the rights and responsibilities of American citizens, which will enable them to function effectively as independent individuals in a democratic society.

The educational program provides each child with the fundamental academic skills and basic knowledge required for his/her maximum development, the opportunity for each child to develop his/her interests and abilities to the fullest extent according to his/her individual potential, and special services to promote the physical, academic and emotional development of each child. It is the district's goal to foster in students good work habits, integrity, self-discipline, good sportsmanship, self-confidence and a sense of purpose. Extracurricular activities will be offered when possible to enhance the core academic program.

Parents and teachers are encouraged to offer their expertise in helping to develop a school environment that is academically challenging, psychologically satisfying and socially fulfilling for students at all levels. The objectives of an educational program are best realized when mutual understanding, cooperation and effective communications exist among the home, community and school. At all stages and facets of the district's educational process, the needs and aspirations of its students shall remain central.

Valhalla UFSD includes parts of the towns of Mt. Pleasant, North Castle and Greenburgh and is primarily a residential and suburban community with a total population of approximately 10,200 people. The district is served by two elementary schools, namely, the Virginia Road Elementary School (Grades K-2) and the Kensico Elementary School (Grades 3-5) one (6-8) Middle School, and one (9-12) High School. The High School is accredited by the University of the State of New York and the Middle Atlantic States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

To further its educational philosophy, the Board of Education establishes the following goals and objectives:

To create an atmosphere which is safe, stimulating, and conducive to learning;

To equip students with the basic skills of learning and integrate these into all studies;

To employ the best possible school staff, including both professional and support personnel;

To create a school society of harmonious relationships between students and educators that is built on sensitivity to the needs of others, respect for public and private property, and justice;

To foster the awareness of and appreciation of racial, religious and cultural differences through classroom discussions, assemblies, workshops, plays and bulleting boards;

To foster the acceptance of personal differences by integrating students with disabilities into the life of the school;

To ensure that staff, students, and parents are afforded opportunities for meaningful participation in the development and evaluation of programs and policies;

To encourage each individual to strive to reach his or her potential;

To strive for maximum efficiency in the use of district resources to meet the goals and objectives of the various programs and services;

To provided educational programs and services which fulfill the needs of the district and comply with the Commissioner’s Regulations;

To employ objective testing methods to determine the needs of students;

To promote the development of programs and services which encourage cooperation and interaction between the community-at-large and district staff and students;

To support a sports program for female and male students to develop physical skills, teamwork, and healthy competition as well as the personal skills of leadership and self-discipline;

To ensure each student’s progress by building on learning already acquired and by providing remediation or enrichment as needed;

To provide fair, objective, and meaningful informal and formal evaluation to maintain standards and promote growth.
