The Village of Stapleton began in 1912 when the Union Pacific Railroad built its spur line into the county.  Today, the nearest railroad line is located in North Platte, NE.   Incorporated on January 30, 1913.  The city were defined limits by a city ordinance passed by the first Board of  Trustees.   These corporate limits have been changed several times over the years.

Stapleton was named for Daniel C. Stapleton a Foreign Service Officer and later an Ambassador for the United States.    Stapleton along with Col. O'Neill was instrumental in bring the Augustine Priests for Equador to Stapleton.  These Priests established the St. John's Catholic Church in Stapleton.

All records show that Stapleton was a typical rough frontier town.   Today Stapleton is the county seat and an incorporated village.   Gandy is located 3 1/2 miles east of Stapleton and is the only other community in Logan County.   Gandy has a population of approximately 50 .

According to records, Gandy was the original county seat but it was later moved to Stapleton in 1930.   There were many hard feelings, since as well as losing the courthouse, Gandy would also be losing the county high school.   The county offices were spread out amongst a number of buildings until the purchase of the Nicholas Hotel shortly thereafter.   In 1962, the Logan County Courthouse burned one cold winter March night.   The county offices were again spread out among the various buildings in Stapleton that had spaces open to use until a new building was built on the old site in 1964.

There is a k-12 school in Stapleton which served not only Logan County but also parts of Lincoln and McPherson Counties.   The population of Stapleton as of the last census is 301 and the county's population is 774

Logan County was formed by an act of the Nebraska Legislature in 1885, but prior to that time was a part of Custer County.  The County was named after Major General John Alexander Logan, for Illinois.   After the Civil War, Logan helped organize the Grand Army of the Republic and is credited with naming May 30, 1868 as the first Memorial Day.  

The first settlers in Logan County were the Pawnee Indians, the most advanced of all tribes in Nebraska, who farmed the land and built permanent homes.
