About Us :
Tijeras is located at the intersection of Interstate 40 and NM 337 in Tijeras Canyon east of Albuquerque. It is one of only two incorporated communities in the area typically called the "East Mountains", but it is really only one of many communities along the eastern slopes of the Sandia and Manzano Mountains. Tijeras is Spanish for scissors; there is a story that the name was inspired by the shape of the canyons that meet near the townsite. The canyon has, for centuries, been a travel route between the Rio Grande valley and the areas to the east. A settlement has continuously existed at this site since at least the 1850's, however, the Village was not incorporated until 1973.
The major employers in the community are Albuquerque Public Schools and Rio Grande Portland Cement Corporation (mining and manufacturing). In 2000, almost 500 persons were employed within the community. Well over half of the jobs were accounted for by the above two employers.
