Voters Not Politicians is a nonpartisan, grassroots group leading the charge to fix Michigan’s broken redistricting process through a constitutional amendment.

Voters should choose their politicians, not the other way around. That’s why we’re working to end gerrymandering in Michigan. Voters Not Politicians held 33 Town Halls in 33 days - from Marquette to Monroe - in 2016 to gather feedback from Michiganders about how they would like to see the system change. This feedback was used in addition to guidance from local organizations and national experts to create a solution that will fix our broken redistricting process.

Over 3,000 volunteers collected more than 425,000 petition signatures from voters across the political spectrum, representing each of Michigan’s 83 counties. These signatures were submitted to the Michigan Secretary of State to get our solution on the November 6, 2018 ballot.

Voters from across the political spectrum recognize that the current system is rigged and want a redistricting process that is fair, impartial, and transparent.

    The solution? Amending Michigan’s Constitution to put an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission of 13 voters – not politicians – in charge of drawing our election maps.

    
    

    Our solution will give Michigan election maps that are created through a fair, impartial and transparent process. It’s a great F-I-T for our mitten!

    
    

    Fair - Voters will draw election maps - not lobbyists and politicians - that cannot give one party or candidate an unfair or disproportionate advantage.

    
    

    Impartial - With the current process, politicians and lobbyists approve their own maps, where they are free to manipulate districts with loose guidelines. Under our solution, maps will be drawn through compromise by Republicans, Democrats and voters who don’t affiliate with either party and must follow strict criteria.

    
    

    Transparent - Right now, politicians and lobbyists draw maps behind closed doors with no public input . Our process – including data and software used to draw the maps – will happen in public meetings with input from Michiganders across the state.

    
    

    Voters Not Politicians has gathered enough petition signatures to put our proposal on the November 6, 2018 ballot. If a majority vote “yes” on our proposal, it will amend Michigan’s Constitution and the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission will use 2020 census data to draw districts for the 2022 elections.
