Smoke Detectors

We have smoke detectors available for purchase by West Reading residents at a cost of $10 each.  We will also install these detectors for you in your home at no additional cost.  Please contact the Fire Chief at 610-372-9621 ext 100 or by email at [email protected] for more information or to schedule a visit by a member of the department.  We can evaulate your home and decide how many detectors you will need and locate them in the home for you.  We also change batteries for our elderly residents who are unable to change them on their own.  Please call or write for more information.

We also have 10-year smoke detector batteries available at a cost of $10 each.  These batteries are said to last for 10 years if installed in a smoke detector.  Please call for more information.

Emergency Siren at Borough Hall

You might have heard the emergency siren at Borough Hall going off and wondered what it is and what it is for. Well, the siren is designed to alert you to an emergency condition like a storm or other natural emergency. If you hear the siren activate, tune your TV or radio to a local station to see if there is an emergency broadcast that requires your attention. Siren testing takes place at 6:00 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month. If you have any questions please feel free to give us a call.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

We have recently got some reports from residents that they have had Carbon Monoxide detectors that we activating in their homes, and they were unsure of what they should do. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odorless gas that comes from burning fossil fuels such as gasoline, wood, coal, propane, oil, and methane. When these fuels burn incompletely, CO is produced. If a CO detector activates, we can check your home with meters that we carry on our apparatus that can detect the presence of CO and we can validate the reasons for the detector’s activation. If you don’t check the reason for the detector’s activation, you could be placing all of the occupants of your home in danger.
