Westford Community Access Television, Inc. (Westford CAT) is a newly formed non-profit corporation charged with the mission to promote and encourage the use of local cable access to enhance a free and diverse exchange of ideas and interests that foster community participation and educational opportunities.
Prior to January 1, 2006, the production facilities of Westford's Public, Educational and Governmental (PEG) Access Program cable channels were operated by Comcast Corporation. This arrangement was carried out as part of the Town of Westford's previous cable license agreement. Beginning in 2006, Comcast would no longer be responsible to manage the PEG production facilities. As part of the current agreement, Comcast agreed to turn over control of PEG Access to our community. In the summer of 2005, a group of interested residents worked to create a new an independent PEG access management organization, and on July 12, 2005, Westford Community Access Television came into existence. In September 2005, the Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to appoint Westford CAT as the the Town's public access provider.
Since Comcast was no longer going to be responsible for the maintaining the PEG facilities, Westford CAT needed to find a new home for the studios and equipment. Nashoba Valley Technical High School (NVTHS) recently added classroom space to their facility on Littleton Road. Part of the new space included a media center, complete with the shell of a TV production studio. Since NVTHS had the available space, all parties agreed that it would be mutually beneficial to locate the Westford CAT studios at NVTHS. In December of 2005, all of the Westford CAT equipment was moved out of the Comcast studio on Liberty Way and installed at the new facilities at NVTHS. Broadcasting from the Westford CAT studios at NVTHS started in January of 2006. Comcast still acts as the carrier for Westford's PEG cable channels, but all production and broadcast operations are the responsibility of Westford Community Access Television, Inc.
The corporation currently has 7 board members. Five members are Westford residents, 1 member represents the Westford Public School system, and another member represents Nashoba Valley Technical High School. The Westford Board of Selectmen have the right to appoint a member to the Westford CAT Board, and that appointment is expected in the near future.
