Our Mission:
"The Staff at Wilbur Wright School, in cooperation with home and community, is dedicated to providing all students with educational opportunities to help them maximize their potential as whole and productive persons in an ever-changing society. Meeting the individual needs of all our students, striving to achieve academic excellence, having high expectations of them, along with the development of pride, self worth, and a feeling of belonging are of the utmost importance in the support system of Wilbur Wright."

About Our School:
Wilbur Wright Elementary School opened its doors for the first time in the fall of 1950. Because the year was "1950", our street address is: 1950 Washington Street. The name was chosen based on the birth of Wilbur Wright in a small farmhouse just outside the city limits of New Castle. The school logo is the Wright brothers’ bi-plane and our sports teams are called "Flyers."

The student population is Kindergarten through 6th grade with an enrollment of 350 for the fall of 200. Wilbur Wright has had a total of five principals over the past 52 years. Mr. Thurman, Mr. Weisheit and Mr. Cecil Bronnenberg served in the early Years. Mr. Ted Fitzgerald was principal for 22 years from 1970 - 2002. Mr. Jay Bedwell was principal for two years from 2002 - 2004. Mr. Tony Personett is returning for his third year here at Wilbur Wright. We have had five secretaries over the history of the school. Many of the staff members have served most of their careers in education at Wilbur Wright. There are many things unique to Wilbur Wright, one of which is Super Reader. This is a reading program that encourages students to read library books as enrichment to the curriculum. The PTA purchases each Super Reader a T-shirt and adds books to the library specifically for this program. The PTA also sponsors several fund raisers each year. One being the Fall Festival, which provided playground equipment in 1995, library books, funds for teachers, and other special projects.

Our Bike-A-Thon and Walk-A-Thon each spring funds a scholarship program in honor of Ron Lightfoot, former teacher at Wilbur Wright. In the spring of 2006, twelve scholarships of $1,000 each were given to former Wilbur Wright students graduating from high school. Many families now have sent three generations of their students to Wilbur Wright. Family ties to the school run deep. Parents volunteer for Super Reader, Fall Festival and field trips. Our participation rate for Parent Teacher Conference is above 95%.

The school has 105 computers with 30 being located in our "new" computer lab. Students grades k - 1 receive 30 minutes twice per week and students grades 2 - 6 receive 40 minutes twice per week of structured computer instructions. The library is automated and has 8 computers for students to use for card catalog purposes. There is a Learning Disabilities lab which has 5 computers. Each classroom has at least 2 computers.

Wilbur Wright is a Title I school qualifying for service to all students in all grades since 1998. Many hours of planning went into the School Wide Plan under Title I over the last five years and now carried over into our Public Law 221 plan beginning in the fall of 2001. Self-evaluation, research-based education, incorporation of state standards, and technology are all part of the on-going process to provide quality education for each student at Wilbur Wright.
