Winona Independent School District (ISD) is located in the northeastern part of Smith County, on Highway 155 approximately three miles north of Interstate 20. The community is between Dallas, Texas and Shreveport, Louisiana. Tyler, Texas, 15 miles to the south, provides medical and educational facilities. The majority of the population is concentrated in the five communities of Red Springs, Sand Flat, East Texas Center, Starrville, and the community of Winona. East Texas Center serves as the hub of the industrial base and is strategically located at the geographic center of the Tyler-Longview metropolitan area. The community is home to the University of Texas Health Center, which is recognized as a medical research facility. Winona ISD is fully accredited by the Texas Education Agency and is classified as AA under the University Interscholastic League enrollment guidelines. The district provides pre-kindergarten through 12th grade programs. Widespread community support is manifested in active booster clubs and parental programs. In the school district, community pride and high expectations for educational quality serve as driving forces in the district's quest for excellence.
