About Keller
(The following information is provided by the late Lyda White.)
In July, 1881, I. W. Wood gave the people of northeast Tarrant County 40 acres along Big Bear Creek to establish a townsite. The land lay beside the right-of-way of the Texas & Pacific Railroad. The original name of the community was Athol, but was changed to honor Railroad Superintendent John Keller.
With the railroad came new families and businesses to Keller. In March of 1882, the federal government made the town of Keller official by appointing Charles C. Neace as its first postmaster. Neace ran the first post office from his home.
Keller's water supply was originally limited to home cisterns, which caught rain water and a public well, located on Vine Street. In 1906, a new well was drilled on Main Street and remained in service until 1960. Electricity came to Keller in the early 1880's, followed by a telephone system which was privately owned until 1966.
Keller today is energetic, diverse and growing toward its bright future. This emerging city overlies an interesting and colorful past.
The Keller History Archive
The Keller History Archive is locating and preserving information about our heritage. One avenue of this preservation is the storing of digital images of documents and photographs from public and private collections in computer files. Eventually, all of this archive will be available from the Keller Library. As a first step, a small subset of images is now available on our web site. During this trial demonstration, additional images will be added from time to time.
Feel free to enjoy and learn from the demonstration by going to the search engine page and typing a keyword or phrase into the search interface (try something like railroad, water, train or archive). Your comments or suggestions are welcome and will help guide the work toward full availability of the archive.
