Dr. Alcala is a sports medicine physician, nonsurgical orthopaedist, and concussion specialist. He also serves as the director of Sports Medicine at the AHN Pediatric Orthopaedic Institute in Wexford, Pennsylvania.
He is currently one of the team physicians for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Avonworth High School. He also serves as the district physician for Avonworth School District and as the director of orthopaedic training for the Family Medicine Residency Program in affiliation with the Heritage Valley Health System.
Dr. Alcala received his medical degree from Saint George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada. He completed his general surgical internship at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, and second year of general surgical residency at the Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey.
He underwent three years of a National Institute of Health research fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He went on to complete his family medicine residency at Heritage Valley – Beaver, in Beaver, Pennsylvania. He then completed his fellowship in primary care sports medicine at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He trained as a team physician for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Dr. Alcala was also one of the physicians for the Robert Morris University men’s hockey team, the Moon High School sports teams, the River Hounds soccer team, and the Harlequins rugby team. He is currently involved in professional boxing as a cut man.
He is a published author of several articles, presented multiple abstracts for research, and has given oral presentations on a variety of topics to medical audiences around the country. Dr. Alcala has received an award as a minority scholar in the field of cancer research.
Dr. Alcala is board-certified in both Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, the USA Boxing Association, the American Association of Family Physicians, and the American Board of Family Medicine.
